Preview of the Carraig na bhFear 5km road race...

Location.......The village of Carrig na bhFear is located about 6 miles / 10kms to the north of Cork City.

From Cork City, the easiest way to get there is via the junction at the Grotto to the rear of Blackpool Shopping Centre. Drive up Dublin Hill and just keep going straight.

Registration is at the National School at the north end of the village. As you can see, the start and finish points are very close by.

Registration at the Primary School...

Course......The 5km course is in the shape of a spoon as you can see below...

Profile.....Two gradual hills in the first half, downhill for the second half.

Description......The race starts just to the north of the Primary School at the edge of the village.

As you can see from the photo above, there is a junction just after the start of the race. This is shown below in more detail. This is the turn into the GAA grounds and the finish line.

The first km is a gradual uphill.. It's not especially steep but a gradual climb all the same. At about the 1km mark, you come to a Y junction at the Co-Op Stores where you turn off right. As you can see, there is a short spell of about 500m gradual downhill running ahead....

At about 1.7kms, you come to the second gradual climb. At about 2kms, you turn left at the crossroads...

This is a quiet country road with just a few houses scattered along the way. At 2.7kms, you come to the T-junction below. This is worth noting because it represents the end of the gradual climbs and from here, it's downhill to the finish.

As about the 4km mark, you're back to that Y junction again and you continue on downhill...

...and then left and into the finish line near the GAA grounds.

Overall.......A reasonable 5km course just to the north of Cork City. Two gradual hills will slow things a bit but on the flip side, the last half of the race is pretty fast.
